BIO

ABOUT ME

In 1978, I was born in Lisbon, in a typical middle-class family, being the first daughter, and second child of two nurses. I was always an honour student, and a person of many interests, talents, and hobbies. I've earned several awards along my school years in creative writing, arts (drawing and painting), science projects, and foreign languages. Also, I've earned academic distinctions and awards for my outstanding academic performance. Reading, playing the guitar, and contemplating myself and the world was my way of living through my adolescence years. Later, I would apply that to my social studies.

In 1996, I became a Social Educator having worked in the next few years with children and young people from disadvantageous social backgrounds. I majored in Sociology in 2000, concluded an MSc and a PhD in Sociology in 2003 and 2008, and diverse post-graduation courses in Training, in Marketing, and in Management. In 2012 I returned to college as an undergraduate to major in Biology with a specialization in Evolutionary and Developmental Biology and a minor in Geology (2015). I went on to study Marine Sciences and Applied Microbiology at a postgraduate level (2016). In 2017 I started a third BSc degree, this time in Geology, having graduated in 2020. In 2021 I began a fourth bachelor’s degree in applied Math and Computation, that I'm soon finishing.

Wanting to build on my wide and long experience as a Data Analyst and Data Miner, I concluded a master’s in data science (2021) and have since specialized in different aspects of Data Science and Analytics. I currently pursue a master in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence, and another in Data Engineering. After finishing those, I'm planning to start another master, this time in Mathematical Modelling and Machine Learning. I've already accepted an unconditional offer to do so. My final objective is to start and conclude a second PhD, in Artificial Intelligence (focusing on Machine Learning).

I have been teaching at a college level for 23 years, in Methodology, Quantitative Analysis, Marketing, Social and Managerial Sciences. In parallel, I had a corporate career in Human Resources, Marketing, and Marketing Research and Business Strategy, for more than a decade with specialization in the Pharmaceutical and Medical sectors. I did consultancy for diverse sectors, public and private clients, including the Portuguese and the Canadian government. In the last 3 years I have been working as a Data Analyst/ Scientist, a Data Team Lead and managing the development of data products and software applied to data projects development.

My artistic inclination has led me to design websites, something that I have been doing for professional and personal purposes for more than 20 years, now.

Professionally, I define myself first and foremost as an inter/multidisciplinary scientist/ researcher and technician. Also, as a Data/ Machine Learning lover and enthusiast. Today, my teaching concentrates on Methodology, Quantitative Analysis, General and Historical Sociology, Sociology of Knowledge, Science and Technology, Sociology of Professions, and Economic Sociology. My research spans across different disciplines: Sociology, Data Science, Microbiology, and Micropaleontology and is growingly evolving towards an integrative theoretical and methodologic approach. I am also a consultant in Medical Marketing, the recipient of several academic awards, and an author.

HOBBIES

INTERESTS

Having completed so far three Bachelor degrees in very distinct areas, and continuing to amplify and deepen my scientific curiosity and interest, I can say that studying is both a hobby and a career investment. Studying helps me grow as a person, an educator, and a scientist, but, in fact, is mostly something I do for fun.

Another main hobby of mine is invertebrate paleontology. I own a converted van (a campervan) and I travel extensively searching for fossils throughout Portugal. Complementing this interest I've been learning climbing, diving, and speleology. I love walking and exploring Nature.

I also play the guitar, compose, write in different styles and formats and draw. Webdesign, programming, and digital art are other of my interests. This website and several others, for example, is developed and managed by me.

Most of all I'm a curious and adventurous person who likes exploring herself and the world in as many ways as possible.

SELECTED RESEARCH PROJECTS

Paleogeography-to-Petroleum Systems

Research Innovations for Offshore Nova Scotia

Client: OERA (Nova Scotia Offshore Energy Research Association)
Partner: Chronosurveys, Lda., University of Lisbon (Faculty of Sciences, and Faculty of Social and Political Sciences)
Summary: We don’t really know what we already know, since microfossil biostratigraphical data produced for almost a century, is dispersed, unorganised, relationally unvalidated and, in a large part, recorded in non-digital archives. Such data is, nonetheless, compared to new generated data, much cheaper to access, incredibly vaster, and holder of incomparable analytical potential. This project is based on a large-scale collection of previously generated nannofossil Jurassic and Early Cretaceous biostratigraphical data and aims to apply both traditional micropaleontological methods and modern data science methodologies to the in-depth analysis of that large dataset. The ultimate goal is to determine the paleobiogeographical and chronostratigraphical detail of original and progressive water mixing between the Atlantic, the Tethyan and the Pacific geographic domains, in order to better circumscribe the conditions that presided to the Nova Scotia basin formation.

Braarudosphaera bigelowii

Global Reassessment of Evolutionary Paleogeography and Paleoecology

Partners: University of Lisbon (Faculty of Sciences, and Faculty of Social and Political Sciences), Northwestern University
Summary: A major documental search on a local, regional, and international level is being conducted in order to identify as many locations as possible where Braarudosphaera bigelowii has been reported. More than 2000 locations worldwide, ranging from the Early Cretaceous (Berriasian) to Recent, have already been identified.

The project aims to reconstruct the evolutionary paleogeography and biogeography of Braarudosphaera bigelowii, contribute to settle the controversy on a possible Jurassic origin, and reanalyze current assertions on Braarudosphaera bigelowii's paleoecology and ecology.

The Evolution of Sociology in Russia

Theoretical Reappraisal and Sociopolitical Constraints

Partners: University of Lisbon (Faculty of Social and Political Sciences)
Summary: Eastern European sociologists are systematically missing or hugely underrepresented in treaties on the History of Sociology. Additionally, Russian history provides rich opportunities of analysis of the political constraints of the institutionalization and operation of science.

This project aims to address both issues, globally reassessing the evolution of Sociology in Russian from the eighteenth century to the present.

Paleowatch and Paleomonitor

Towards a Sociology of Paleontology

Partners: University of Lisbon (Faculty of Sciences, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences)
Summary: The dialectic interplay of Paleontology and Sociology in our team lead to an interest in developing a “Sociology of Paleontology”, that is, systematic research into the social patterns of Paleontology, paleontologists and paleontological research. That goal is being pursued a) through scientific research and academic publishing and b) through the organization of an international observatory housed on Paleowire (http://www.paleowire.com/), which comprises two branches: Paleomonitor (quantitative branch) and Paleowatch (qualitative branch).

About The Publication
The Late Cretaceous paleobiogeography of the coccolithophore Braarudosphaera bigelowii is reconstructed based on 331 stratigraphic occurrences and complemented by 307 neighboring absences. During the Cenomanian B. bigelowii was found throughout the European seaways, at the base of the North America Interior Seaway, at the paleo-Atlantic margin of South America, in the Neuquén Basin, on the southern tip of the Indian plate, and on the Kerguelen Plateau. During the Late Cretaceous, its range gradually expanded: northwards along the North Sea, into the North American Interior Seaway, eastwards through the interior European seaways, across central Russia, southeastwards into China, and along the Asian coast up to Japan. The Falkland Plateau appears to have played a pivotal role in the colonization of the eastern coast of South America, the Atlantic and Indian Ocean margins of Africa, Madagascar, India, western Antarctica, and Australia. By the end of the Maastrichtian, migration extended northwards towards the Arctic, but did not reach the northernmost regions of the North Atlantic. Because biogeographic information is scarce for the northern coast of South America, for several areas along the African margin, and for the overall Pacific coasts, it is difficult to resolve the biogeographic history in these areas. The presence of B. bigelowii could not be confirmed on the northern coast of South America or on the North Atlantic African margin. It is also not possible to ascertain whether the African margin facing the Indian Ocean was completely colonized by the end of the Cretaceous. Sparse observations suggest that the Pacific coast of North America was colonized by B. bigelowii during the Santonian. However, even though data suggests a subsequent northward colonization direction, it is not possible to accurately reconstruct the North Pacific migration paths of B. bigelowii between the Santonian and the Maastrichtian.

About The Project
Paleowire (https://www.paleowire.com/), a project of our lab, fully developed and managed by me in all its aspects, is not strictly a scientific news page neither a specialized blog nor an electronic magazine. Paleowire aims to be a network of resources built, managed, and maintained by paleontology-related academics, students, professionals, and enthusiasts, worldwide. In this sense, Paleowire is more of an academic, a pedagogic, and a scientific outreach platform. The project was born at the Instituto Dom Luiz of the University of Lisbon, Portugal, a top research center with an excess of 160 years of existence, dedicated to the study of Earth Sciences, including paleontologists and post-graduate Paleontology students.
The project has the following main objectives: 1- To provide a centralized place where paleontology-related useful pieces of information can be organized, calendarize and publicized (work opportunities, prizes, scholarships, funding opportunities, calls for papers, event dates and so on); 2- To interpret and publicize the latest relevant research in all fields of Paleontology, as a way to provide detailed information on new methods, techniques, and theoretical approaches. 3- To organize in a single space the available information on classical and new paleontological materials, resources, methods, techniques, and instruments; 4- To provide paleontology-related events and initiatives with free advertising space with worldwide specialized impact; 5- To create and publicize pedagogical materials for students and scientific divulgation resources to professionals and the general public; 6- To strengthen the international and inter-field sense of community amongst paleontologists, with diverse contact opportunities and through the monthly presentation of paleontologists, laboratories, research groups, and projects, in a continuous world tour of day-by-day paleontology. 7- To promote the continuous discussion of Paleontology as a scientific discipline, as a field of research, as a profession and as a hobby.

TESTIMONIALS

WHAT PEOPLE SAY ABOUT ME
clientpicture

“Professor Lurdes is an exceptional and super dedicated Professor. She has always been very concerned, not only with the commitment of her students but also with their performance. She was always there to answer any doubts, and she didn't mind repeating the same part of the subject over and over again just so that her students could understand what was being studied. She is an example of a person, who inspires anyone around her. Her willpower to realize her goals is something to envy. I wish her all the best in the world, because she deserves it!”
SARA CALADO, Former Student, Lisbon

“Lurdes is an exceptional student-colleague-researcher with an amazing work capacity that enables us to increase our own capabilities in achieving otherwise impossible goals, all this beautifully packed within a friendly and always helpful personality. Meeting Lurdes is like the feeling of finding a fossil entirely made of a precious gemstone: the very best of two worlds.”
MÁRIO CACHÃO, Professor, Colleague, Tutor, Co-Author, Lisbon

“I met Professor Lurdes when, in 2002, I joined ISCSP as a Social Communication undergraduate student. Professor Lurdes was always one of the most friendly and attentive people, always available to students, and the way she taught classes was captivating and always made me want to learn more. When I left ISCSP I continued to follow her on her social networks and I even worked with her on a project she had. Always professional and approachable, Professor Lurdes is an inspiring person who makes us think that we can do anything, all it takes is wanting. A force of nature that has deserved success at all that she is dedicated and passionate about!”
ANA LOURENÇO, Former Student, Lisbon

“Lurdes is one of those people we want to be when we grow up! I met Lurdes in my first year of Masters in Geology, we had a common course, and soon I was amazed when I realized that despite being initially trained in Sociology, she was there in a Paleoecology class. I was definitely in the presence of someone very special. I quickly realized that I was facing a struggling and courageous professional because that is the only way to fulfill all the challenges that she proposes. Very committed and focused, successfully, and effectively accomplishing all the objectives she sets out to fulfill. She always wants to do more and better, always wants to learn more about something she already knows or new things about something she doesn't know. Lurdes is a very complete professional, but even so, she is always concerned with acquiring new skills and more knowledge in order to become a better professional. It should be mandatory to have a Lurdes in our professional and personal life.”
DANIELA RATO, Former Colleague, Lisbon

clientpicture

“One of the characteristics we share is an immense thirst for discovery and learning. It was Lurdes who excited me to return to college at the age of 62 for a dreamed Degree in Psychology, after having completed a convenient (albeit passionate) Degree in an unrelated area, followed by a Master's. All for the simple pleasure of learning. As if there was an inevitable need to understand the psychophysiological mechanisms that govern the emotions that I have spent my entire professional life recreating. It is Lurdes and her enthusiasm that comes to mind when the body tries to convince me to give me up. It is Lurdes that I recommend as a friend to my friends at lesser good times, those times in which a good dose of energy and enthusiasm, affection, and the hope that, in the end, everything is possible and everything can go terribly well, can rescue lives.”
LAURINDA FERREIRA, Colleague, Lisbon
